EVB's Detroit Lions Mock Draft 2021A NEW ROAR

Hope. The only thing that keeps the Detroit sports fans going as we watch even our most cherished sports teams fall to the bottom of the league tables.

This Lions has been no exception to this rule as we shipped our franchise QB across the states in exchange for a new face of the franchise and future draft capital. If that wasn’t enough, we cleaned out Ford Field by bringing in a polarizing college scout in Brad Holmes from the LA Rams and attracted an extremely talented gang of player coaches lead by none other than former Lions Tight End Dan Campbell. Although they’ve been receiving league-wise praise this offseason, the roster has a vast number of holes to fill, a limited amount of players signed for more than a prove-it year, and limited draft picks organize a competitive squad. That being said, it makes it much harder to be disappointed with so many great options to fill those voids.

Let’s take a look at the direction I believe the lions should go in for the 2021 draft.

Below I will go over the specifics and 2 separate mock drafts including a mock with no trades and a mock with one trade.

DRAFT SPECIFICS

Draft Needs: WR, OT, LB, S, IDL, CB, QB, EDGE

Current Picks: 7, 41, 72, 101, 112, 153

EVB’s MOCK DRAFT (NO TRADES)

Reference: The Draft Networks Mock Draft Machine

ROUND 1 (Picks 1-32)

Best Positional Value: QB, WR, OT

Top Options:
QB – Justin Fields, OSU | Trey Lance, North Dakota State
WR – Ja’Marr Chase , LSU | Jaylen Waddle & Devonta Smith, Alabama
OT – Penei Sewell, Oregon | Rashawn Slater, Northwestern

My Pick 7: Rashawn Slater OT, Northwestern

What are they getting with Rashawn Slater? Projects as a year one starter that could instantly compete and improve the RT position, and dare I say give the lions one of the better o-lines in the NFL? He’s already proved himself against pro-caliber talent (ie. Chase Young) and has a rare combination of strength and quick processing even with a smaller frame.

ROUND 2 (Picks 33-64)

Best Positional Value: OT, G/C, LB, WR, S, Edge

Top Options:
OT – Dillon Radunz, North Dakota State | Liam Eichenberg, Notre Dame
G/C – Landon Dickerson, Alabama
LB – Nick Bolton, Missouri | Baron Browning, OSU | Jamin Davis, Kentucky
WR – Rondale Moore, Purdue | Elijah Moore, Ole Miss | Dyami Brown, UNC
S – Richie Grant, UCF | Jevon Holland, Oregon
Edge – Azeez Ojulari, Georgia

My Pick 41: Dyami Brown WR, North Carolina

What are they getting with Dyami Brown? A WR with deep-ball impact and great ball tracking talent that could push for a starting WR role in the new look Lions offense. His surprising speed could open up some great plays for the lions and allow Jared Goff to air it out when needed.

ROUND 3 (Picks 65-105)

Best Positional Value: OT, LB, CB, S, WR

Top Options:
OT – Spencer Brown, Northern Iowa | Brady Christensen, BYU
LB – Chazz Surratt, South Carolina | Pete Warner, OSU | Jabrill Cox, LSU
CB – Trill Williams, Syracuse | Benjamin St. Juste, Minnesota | Tay Gowan, UCF
S – Hamsah Nasirildeen, FSU | Jamar Johnson, Indiana | Joshuah Bledsoe S, Missouri
WR – Amon-Ra St. Brown, USC | D’Wayne Eskridge, Western Mich | Amari Rodgers, Clemson

My Pick 72: Jabrill Cox LB, LSU

What are they getting with Jabril Cox? A pursuit style linebacker that can play man coverage and help out a desperately depleted linebacker core. He could push for a starting role with his ability to cover high end tight end, running back, and slot receiver talent.

My Pick 101: Joshuah Bledsoe S, Missouri

What are they getting with Joshuah Bledsoe? Bledsoe’s ability to serve as a hybrid safety in the nickel and slot could add versatility to an extremely young and 1-year contract ridden Lion’s secondary. Defeating blocks on the fringe and making strong plays in the run game would be a welcoming skill set.

ROUND 4 (Picks 106-144)

Best Positional Value: S, DL, LB, CB, WR, Edge

Top Options:
S – Talanoa Hufanga, USC | Jamien Sherwood, Auburn | Divine Deablo, Virginia Tech
IDL – Jay Tufele, USC | Tyler Shelvin, LSU | Milton Williams, Louisiana Tech
LB – Dylan Moses, Alabama
CB – Shaun Wade, OSU | Robert Rochell, Central Arkansas | Kelvin Joseph, Kentucky
WR – Tutu Atwell, Louisville | Cade Johnson, South Dakota St. | Josh Palmer, Tennessee
Edge – Hamilcar Rashed Jr., Oregon State

My Pick 112: Kelvin Joseph CB, Kentucky

What are we getting with Kelvin Joseph? A big-bodied CB that could work his way onto the field frequently as an outside corner if he develops under Aubrey Pleasant. His college tape is exciting to watch as he lined up against top 10 pick TE Kyle Pitts and Alabama’s arsenal of weapons.

ROUND 5 (Picks 145-184)

Best Positional Value: WR, CB, IDL, OT, LB

Top Options:
WR – Anthony Schwartz, Auburn | Shi Smith, South Carolina | Dazz Newsome, UNC
CB – Ambry Thomas, UofM
IDL – Marvin Wilson, FSU
OT – Josh Ball, Marshall
LB – Charles Snowden, Virginia | Monty Rice, Georgia

My Pick 153: Monty Rice LB, Georgia

What are we getting with Monty Rice? If you’ve been a lion’s fan through the Matt Patricia era, you understand how poor our linebacking core has been performing. Monty Rice provides some needed depth with an opportunity to be a fantastic special teams player. Easy decision for the last pick of the draft.

No Picks in ROUND 6 (Picks 185-228) or ROUND 7 (Picks 229-259)

Here is how PFF’s Simulator graded my draft (They aren’t high on Rashawn Slater I guess):

PFF's Draft Grade for EVB's Lions Mock 2021

As you can see the trade opens up the options quite a bit and still fell favorably for the picks I made without trades earlier. We were able to add two more camp bodies that could compete for starting roles. Although I would be happy with my first mock, this second draft allowed us to give Jared Goff a slot and an outside receiver along with some desperately needed interior defensive line depth.

Comment below with how you would grade my draft and questions you may have!

EVB's Detroit Lions Mock Draft 2019

It is almost NFL Draft time! Matt Patricia’s tenure with the Lions isn’t off to a very promising (6-10) start. In fact, his first appearance against the Jets on Monday night will go down in infamy and I’ve actively tried to delete it from memory. But like every other Lions fan, I crave the offseason where hope is in the air and the only winning and losing refers to money.

To most fans surprise, Bob Quinn has been using his sorcery to bring in top free agent prospects with back-loaded contracts. And on top of that, they are all relatively young! Below are my offseason thoughts and annual Detroit Lions mock draft (not including trades) for your viewing pleasure! (I will be adjusting up until draft day)

OFF-SEASON NEEDS (In order of priority): OG, WR, OLB/EDGE, TE, CB/S, RB, Backup QB

OFF-SEASON ACQUISITIONS: Trey Flowers, DE | Justin Coleman, CB | Jesse James, TE | Danny Amendola, WR | Oday Aboushi, OG| Andrew Adams, S

KEY LOSSES: Ziggy Ansah, DE | Glover Quin, S | T.J Lang, OG | Nevin Lawson, CB

EVB’s 2019 DRAFT PICKS

Devin White, LB, LSU

ROUND 1, PICK 8: Devin White, ILB, LSU – Highlights

The number of solid options leads me to believe Quinn will likely trade down in this scenario, but if not, it’s very hard for me to pass up on a candidate like Devin White. While Jarrad Davis offers great run stuffing support, White would be an improvement in coverage, ran a 4.42 40, and will give us a more well-rounded 3-4 front.

Alternatives: Montez Sweat, DE, Mississippi State | DK Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss | T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa

Noah Fant, TE, Iowa

ROUND 2, PICK 11: Noah Fant, TE, Iowa – Highlights

While Jesse James is a clear upgrade from our last years cast of tight ends, we still need a receiving mismatch to open up Golladay and Jones. Enter Noah Fant, one of two Iowa tight ends that put on a show at the combine. This dude is an athlete and could be the red zone monster we have been craving.

Alternatives:  Brian Burns, DE, Florida State | Devin Bush, ILB, Michigan | Nasir Adderley, S, Delaware

Conner McGovern, OG, PSU

ROUND 3, PICK 25: Connor McGovern, G/C, Penn State – Highlights

McGovern led Saquon Barkley and the Nittany Lions run game and has the flexibility of playing both guard and center. After the loss of T.J. Lang, which was sad yet expected, we have a literal hole in the right side of our line. While I am holding out we make another veteran guard signing (Josh Kline?), we may have add depth in the draft.

Alternatives: Vosean Joseph, OLB, Florida | Amani Oruwariye, CB, PSU | Irv Smith Jr., TE, Bama

Charles Omenihu, DE, Texas

ROUND 4, PICK 9: Charles Omenihu, DE, Texas – Highlights

To continue our quest to develop the NFL’s best defensive front, we need to add some more depth and I feel that Charles Omenihu is our guy. He has drawn comparisons to Romeo Okwara, who coincidently, had a fantastic year with us last season racking up 7.5 sacks.

Alternatives: Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, S/CB, Florida | Andy Isabella, WR, UMass | Sione Takitaki, ILB, Brigham Young

Hunter Renfrow, WR, Clemson

ROUND 5, PICK 8: Hunter Renfrow, WR, Clemson – Highlights

We need help in a WR core that is short of surehanded receivers, which was proven late in the season last year. Renfrow is a fantastic route runner that knows how to find space and come back to the QB. He could be a longer-term solution than the Amendola signing.

Alternatives:  Kaden Smith, TE, Stanford | LJ. Scott, RB, MSU | T.J. Edwards, LB, Wisconsin

Karan Higdon, RB, Mich

ROUND 6, PICK 11:  Karan Higdon, RB, Michigan – Highlights

Kerryon needs some support in the running game and I believe the answer is a local product. Karan & Kerryon has a nice ring to it! He is a physical downhill runner that could be a great change of pace from our versatile number one RB. In a run-heavy offense, Higdon was able to put up over 1,000 yards in the season with an average of 5.3 ypc.

Alternatives: Drue Tranquill, LB, Notre Dame | Gardner Minshew, QB, Wash St. | Dru Samia, G, Oklahoma

Tyree Jackson, QB, Buffalo

ROUND 6, PICK 32: Tyree Jackson, QB, Buffalo – Highlights

Originally hailing from Michigan, this Buffalo prospect is extremely enamoring at 6’7″ with a 4.59 40 yard dash. He has an extremely strong arm, although sometimes inconsistent, and the ability to score with his feet. Would love to see him compete for the backup spot or push Connor Cook to his true potential.

Alternatives: Albert Huggins DT Clemson | Jojo McIntosh, S, Washington | Ben Powers, G, Oklahoma

Malik Gant, S, Marshall

ROUND 7, PICK 10: Malik Gant, S, Marshall – Highlights

There is nothing I like more than a hard-hitting safety, and that is exactly what Gant provides. If he is available this late in the draft it is a no brainer for me. We need depth and I believe he could be a formidable force in our secondary.

Alternatives: Danny Wise, DT, Kansas | Mike Bell, S, Fresno St | Trayveon Williams, RB, Texas A&M

Blace Brown, CB, Troy

ROUND 7 PICK 15: Blace Brown, CB, Troy – Highlights

Although Blace Brown appeared to take a minor step back in 2018, he still showed a great ability to find the ball and make big plays. His injury, performance at the East-West Shrine,  and slow combine may drop his stock and allow us to snag him with our last pick of the draft.

Alternatives: Anthony Nelson, DT, Iowa | Joshua Miles, G, Morgan State

I am can’t wait to see what happens throughout the rest of free agency, who the Detroit Lion’s end up drafting, and if we are going to be on Hard Knocks this year. Please drop me a comment on your thoughts and concerns. Go Lions!

Stay casual until next Tuesday!

You graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree in a specific business practice. Accepted a role with a company that presented exciting new challenges and endless growth opportunities. Four years later you find yourself plateauing and in a similar situation you were in when approaching college graduation. What’s next? How can I continue to grow? Am I on a path to lead me to my ultimate goals?

I myself was, and still am, interested in growing as a leader and expanding my network of passionate and goal-oriented individuals. After exploring my options it became glaringly obvious that I wanted to continue my education with an MBA program. And, while that comes with many challenges such as which colleges you want to apply for, online/vs. in-person, local or overseas; the first hurdle is the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). I am writing this article to lay out how I prepared for the GMAT and achieved the score necessary to get accepted into the program of my choice.

Let’s start with the basics:

What is the GMAT?

The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is exactly what it sounds like, a test that grants you admission to a Masters of Business Administration program. While it is a standardized test, what separates the GMAT from the pack is that it is computer adaptive and focuses on understanding your critical thinking skills in a time-sensitive setting. All that means is that the test increases or decreases difficulty depending on how well you are doing.

The test is broken down into four sections: Analytical Writing, Quantitative, Verbal, & Integrated Reasoning.

While you have to take the Analytical Writing and Integrated Reasoning sections, I would dedicate 80-90% of your time studying the Quantitative and Verbal sections as they are the major focus for Universities and make up your overall score.

The Analytical Writing Assessment tests your ability to analyze arguments by finding assumptions and unsubstantiated premises the prompt question relies on.

The Quantitative section challenges you to think conceptually about how to solve a problem as opposed to the traditional formula-based mathematics you are used too. The Data Sufficiency questions are the most jarring as it asks you to decipher whether the problem can be solved with the information given and not what the actual answer is.

The Verbal section tests reading comprehension, the ability to think critically about what each sentence means, and your general knowledge of grammar and diction.

The Integrated Reasoning section is a newer addition to the test that combines both quantitative and verbal skill sets. They generally give you some data or text and ask you to answer a group of questions that you can solve from the info provided. These should seem more relatable if you have been in the workforce for a bit.

Here is the GMAT Exam Format as provided from mba.com:

How does the scoring work?

As I mentioned before, your Verbal and Quantitative make up your total GMAT score which ranges from 200 to 800. MBA.com states that two-thirds of test takers score between 400 and 600.

Verbal and Quantitative scores range from 0 to 60, while scores below 9 and above 44 for the Verbal section and below 7 and above 50 for the Quantitative section are hard to come by.

The Analytical Writing Assessment ranges from 0 to 6 in half-point intervals. It is scored independently twice and then averaged to make up your final score.

Integrated Reasoning scores range from 1 to 8 and there is no partial credit given. Most questions range from 3-5 responses and all responses must be correct in order to receive credit.

What resources are available to help me study?

This is a tricky question as there are unlimited resources out there and they depend on your budget, time, and individual study habits. Truth be told, I tried to study last year with little direction and eventually fizzled out. I came back out this year knowing I needed to change something.

I put money down and bet on myself. I scheduled the test ($250) out 3 months and joined an organization called Prepcorps ($1,000) which forced me to dedicate weekly time with others that had the same goal. I scheduled time with one of the tutors at Prepcorps outside of our regular time to dive deep into my weaknesses.

For the class, we were required to buy the GMAT Official Guide 2018 ($25) and sign up for a website called Magoosh ($200). When you purchase the book and schedule your GMAT you are given a few practice tests that will come in handy. You will get to the tests eventually, but I started my studying by familiarizing myself with concepts utilizing the videos, quizzes, and practice questions on Magoosh. They provide helpful walk-throughs of every question, blog posts that dive further into each issue and have a lengthy catalog of videos that re-introduce you to verbal and quantitative topics.

The key to succeeding in this test is learning from your failures. If you get an answer wrong, always read the explanation and make sure you understand it. Then proceed to try similar questions until you master them. Write the principles down on note cards and quiz yourself whenever you have time.

The last resource I found most important was mental toughness. You will need to get really good at saying no to friends and fun. I know, sounds horrible right? But continuous growth and practice are key to accomplishing your GMAT goals. Prioritize and create a study game plan so you can persevere!

How long should I study for the GMAT?

Before all else, take a diagnostic/practice test and find out where you stand. It will feel weird, but it is the only way to determine what you need to work on. I scored lower than my target and the school I wanted to attend’s average, so I determined that 2-3 months should work. Here is a sample of the 3-month study plan I put in place:

Month 1:
– Learn about the GMAT format and structure & take a diagnostic practice test
– Review your weaknesses and start reviewing general Quantitative & Verbal format and question types.
– End the month with a practice test. Review your practice test results and read answer explanations for questions you got wrong or had to guess on. Create a focused study plan to strengthen those weaknesses.

Month 2:
– Focus on advanced Quantitative & Verbal review, dedicating at least 20 hours a week to practice questions. Make sure you are timing yourself per question to ensure you don’t waste your time come test day.
– Take a second practice test and see where you improved or regressed. Look at answer explanations and create a study plan accordingly.
– Start reviewing the Analytical Writing assessment and Integrated Reasoning strategies. Look at the examples of well-written essays in the back GMAT Official Guide and what constitutes a good score.

Month 3:
– Continue with about 20 hours a week on practice questions by revising question types you got wrong in the past.
– Develop a keen timing strategy to help inform you to move on from difficult questions, as guessing doesn’t impact your score, but unfinished questions do.
– Take a final computerized practice test (preferably the one you got from GMAT) and review answers.
– Review all sections, question types, and fundamental concepts.
– Get a solid meal and a good night’s rest the night before the test and make sure you have everything organized for the exam (Where you need to go, water & snacks, test confirmation documents, etc.)

What score should I aim for?

This relies heavily on which program you are applying for and your personal test-taking abilities. My original goal was 680 and my top choice program average was a 608. My hard work paid off and I was accepted into the MBA Program of my choice!

Check out some of the top MBA programs and their average GMAT scores here.

Don’t be too discouraged, these are only average scores and there are other aspects that are taken into consideration when deciding acceptance.

If you don’t perform as expected, you can take the test again at a cost. I had my exam date 5 days before the deadline to apply for my program and put a lot of added pressure on myself which I wouldn’t recommend to any of my readers. You get your scores instantly and can send them to your top college’s right at the test center.

Long story short, the GMAT is a lot of work, but it is a test anyone can do well at with enough effort. Although this is a lot of information, I definitely left a lot out as well. Please reach out with questions or inquiries on things I may have left out by commenting below.

As always stay casual until next Tuesday!

A new era in Detroit is among us! The Beard Era. Matt Patricia comes to the Lions with his aeronautical expertise, his fantastically ungroomed facial hair, and his dynamic defensive mastermind. In a time when Detroit sports are in chaos, we again have hope that Stafford will hold the Lombardi Trophy. In this post, I will take the GM reigns and see if I can bring the Lion’s Den to the next level in the 2018 draft.

After hours of research, watching highlight videos, and feeding into the offseason hype I’ve thrown together a 7 round mock draft for my Cardiac Cats. I hope you were all able to show the Mothers in your life some love this past Sunday. Although I wasn’t able to be with mine, I hope she knows how important she is in my life. While this blog post isn’t even close to the appreciation she deserves, it is a start. From the adorable bowl cut toddler, the trials and tribulations of a “Nerd-lete” in high school, to the young professional who moved out west and travels the globe, my mother has been through the ringer. And as I am writing this on the plane I know she is eagerly awaiting a text to know I am safe. This post outlines 4 major things I love about my Bernie:

She worries

A lot. Like too much. But I can’t even begin to understand what being a mother is like. From team try-outs, school projects, to my entrance into the working world she has always been there to help me find my way. And even though worrying can be thought of as a bad thing, it is proof that there is someone in this world that cares enough about me to show concern. Everyone should be able to experience that!

She is curious

Extremely. About things as boring as a normal Monday to my large overseas adventures. She is always asking the question, why? And although it may sound like an interrogation at times, I know it is because she loves being a part of my life. Her curiosity has become a huge factor in my success. Allowing me to dive deep into why things are and how I can creatively accomplish my goals.

She is family first

Just like my Oma (grandma), my mother wants to keep our family close. Which can be hard since my brother and I moved out west after graduation. Limited vacation time allows us to only share some of the holidays we got to enjoy when we were younger. The times may have changed, but my Mom keeps the traditions alive better than ever. My takeaway is that although change is inevitable, you can still maintain your core principles to guide you.

She remembers

Birthdays. Anniversaries. Exams. Graduations. You name it, she will remember. Her care and thoughtfulness show through in everything she does. Timely phone calls, handwritten cards, and the gift you never told anyone about always make your day that much better. Proof that the little things in life can make the biggest difference.

I wish I could’ve spent Mother’s Day with my mother, but I had a U.K. adventure already in the books. Luckily we have a family trip coming up and I will be able to show her the appreciation she deserves. Love you Momma and see you soon!

Feel free to add some comments about what makes your mother special and send her some love!

Bob Quinn has people talking with his strategic offseason moves and effective draft day decisions. I look forward to continued progress and hope he seeks out my expertise again this year. I have laid out all 7 rounds for the lions below and even added an alternative route I would be happy with: Draft Day Needs: Edge Rusher, Defensive Tackle, Cornerback, Wide Receiver, & Power Running Back. 21st Pick: Round 1 Pick 21 My Pick: Haason Reddick, LB, Temple Alternate: Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan With the 21st pick of the draft, the Lions need to select a game changer. If you are a die-hard Detroit Lions fan such as myself, you know that we finished the season the same way we started. Super disappointing. Although Matt Stafford was able to lead a record year in fourth-quarter comebacks, our hearts can only handle so much.

Bob Quinn has people talking with his strategic offseason moves and effective draft day decisions. I look forward to continued progress and hope he seeks out my expertise again this year. I have laid out all 7 rounds for the lions below and even added an alternative route I would be happy with:

Draft Day Needs: Edge Rusher, Defensive Tackle, Cornerback, Wide Receiver, & Power Running Back.

21st Pick: Round 1 Pick 21

My Pick: Haason Reddick, LB, Temple

Alternate: Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan

With the 21st pick of the draft, the Lions need to select a game changer. Whether that is a force to pair up with Ziggy Ansah on the edge or a sideline to sideline linebacker, I want to see fear inside the opposing QB’s eyes. Although we picked up some depth at linebacker, I believe it would be a big mistake to not select the versatile freak athlete in Haason Reddick if we are given the opportunity.

53rd Pick: Round 2 Pick 21

My Pick: Montravius Adams, DT, Auburn

Alternate: Ahkellow Witherspoon, CB, Colorado

Continuing my defensive trend, I am interested in beefing up the middle as well to support A’shawn Robinson and the aging Haloti Ngata. Adam’s is a quick pass rush defender with a recorded 4.87 40-time and a solid scheme fit for a three-technique defensive tackle in a 4-3 defense. He was consistently tested against pro-ready offenses in the SEC and could benefit from the leadership of Teryl Austin.

85th Pick: Round 3 Pick 21

My Pick: Jordan Willis, DE, Kansas State

Alternate: D’Onta Foreman, RB, Texas

If Aaron Rodgers isn’t nervous yet he should be. No Olivia Munn and no more Hail Mary’s! It’s clear that Ansah needs help on the other side and it needs to happen in the top end of the draft. I only hope that we are so lucky to snag up Jordan Willis late in the third round. With great speed and a smooth pursuit to the ball carrier, our defense is well on its way to greatness.

126th Pick: Round 4 Pick 21

My Pick: Rasul Douglas, CB, WVU

Alternate: Carlos Watkins, DT, Clemson

Yes. You are reading that correctly. Yet another defender. But Lawson and Slay need support in the secondary and all of the injuries last year proved that. And since Bob Quinn is looking for playmakers, why not select a good-sized press corner that led the NCAA with 8 interceptions his senior year? Douglas is my golden goose for this draft and I hope we can make it happen!

166th Pick: Round 5 Pick 21

My Pick: Samaje Perine, RB, Oklahoma

Alternate: Amara Darboh, WR, Michigan

After solidifying all of the Detroit Lions defensive needs, there are still plenty of great athletes available on the offensive side of the ball. We revamped our o-line and now we need a physical beast-mode of a runner to switch up the pace of Theo Riddick and Ameer Abdullah. Assuming they stay healthy…Perine is our guy! Although he was bitten by the injury bug his senior year, there are plenty of stats and video to prove his effectiveness.

206th Pick: Round 6 Pick 21

My Pick: Chidobe Awuzie, CB, Colorado

Alternate:  Anthony Walker, OLB/ILB, Northwestern

Aside from having a sweet last name, Awuzie provides a big-frame corner with the ability to make plays (4 sacks, 65 tackles with 12 passes broken up, and one interception in 2016). He definitely isn’t as polished as some of the early round prospects but could spruce up the depth competition on a needy secondary.

216th Pick: Round 6 Pick 31

My Pick: Kenny Golladay, WR, Northern Illinois

Alternate: Brad Kaaya, QB, Miami

We have to re-sign Anquan Boldin. No questions asked. But we also need a big play receiver for the future. At 6’4″ running a 4.4 40 yard dash, Golladay is an intriguing late round pick with a big upside. As many options as the Detroit Lions can provide Stafford the better.

253rd Pick: Round 7 Pick 32

My Pick: Joshua Dobbs, QB, Tennessee

Alternate: Josiah Price, TE, MSU

The inevitable but ever-exciting last pick of the draft. Bob Quinn believes it is good practice to draft a QB in the draft and Dobbs seems to be the best fit. On the other hand, a solid blocking tight end from the area wouldn’t be a bad pick either. I am looking forward to seeing the direction the Detroit Lions go.

I would love to hear your thoughts on my draft selections and where I went wrong. That will be pretty hard though with my vast NFL experience. Drop a comment below or tweet me @evbtuesdays. If you are interested in my full first round mock draft, check it out here!

Thursday, April 27th. The date we have all been waiting for since Atlanta blew a 28-3 lead at the Lady Gaga concert. THE 2017 NFL DRAFT. Where dreams are made and the Cleveland Browns make terrible decisions. After weeks of research, following up on rumors, excessive googling, and looking back at my favorite college players I have compiled my first round predictions:

1. Cleveland Browns (1-15)

Top needs: QB, pass rusher, DB

PICK: Myles Garrett, DE, Texas A & M

The Cleveland Browns have been the laughing stock of the NFL for as long as I can remember. With 19 different starting QB’s since 1999, and the inability to retain their one positive story line in Tyrell Pryor it is hard to be hopeful. They can help themselves in the 2017 NFL Draft by selecting the best player available, Myles Garrett. His game tape and stellar combine leave nothing to the imagination. He will join the youthful front seven including Emmanuel Ogbah, Danny Shelton, Christian Kirksey, and Jamie Collins.

2. San Francisco 49ers (2-14)

Top needs: QB, OLB, OL

PICK: Solomon Thomas, DE, Stanford

When it’s all said and done, I actually think Brian Hoyer can do well with the right pieces. Right now the 49ers don’t have the right pieces. Solomon Thomas is the best available talent and will add depth to their current squad and help with their transition to a 4-3 defense. (DeForest Buckner, Arik Armstead and Aaron Lynch)

3. Chicago Bears (3-13)

Top needs: DB, OL, TE

PICK: Jamal Adams, S, LSU

Will Mike Glennon be the savior the Bears need to be relevant again? Probably not, but it does push the need of QB to a later round. Their secondary is a clear area of improvement, so a versatile safety with the ability to stuff the run is a good fit. Jamal Adams was an established leader for the LSU Tigers and will be a great addition to an unmotivated locker room.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars (3-13)

Top needs: TE, DT, OL

PICK: Leonard Fournette, RB, LSU

After the large spend in Free Agency on names like Calais Campbell and A.J. Bouye, they need to revive an unexciting offensive squad. With the passing offense struggling behind Blake Bortles and not crossing into the top 20 rushing squads since 2011, the Jaguars add a new workhorse back behind Leonard Fournette. Although they have Chris Ivory and T.J. Yeldon in the backfield, neither presents the power and skill of Fournette. They can address their offensive line and tight end needs later in the draft.

5. Tennessee Titans (from Los Angeles Rams) (9-7)

Top needs: CB, WR, ILB

PICK: Marshon Lattimore, CB, OSU

Although Marcus Mariota could use some help on the offensive side of the ball, the 29th ranked secondary of the Titans needs to be addressed early in the draft. Marshon Lattimore is the top candidate from the NFL secondary farm team Ohio State. Lattimore can cover ground quickly with his 4.36 40 yard dash and lock-down receivers.

6. New York Jets (5-11)

Top needs: QB, OLB, CB

PICK: Mitchell Trubisky, QB, UNC

Look, whether or not Christian Hackenberg is their QB of the future they need to get an identity. Aside from the fact that they have shown great interest in Mitchell Trubisky, he actually makes sense as the most pro-ready QB prospect in this year’s draft.

7. Los Angeles Chargers (5-11)

Top needs: WR, DE, OG

PICK: Malik Hooker, S, OSU

With the Chargers moving to LA there is a clear need to win over a new fan base. Shouldn’t be hard to beat out the Ram’s, right? I went with the best talent on the board pick to ensure the longevity of their defense. Malik Hooker had a crazy good 2016 campaign and looks to be an Ed Reed type defensive back at his very best. Look for him to add depth behind the aging Dwight Lowery.

8. Carolina Panthers (6-10)

Top needs: OT, DE, RB

PICK: Dalvin Cook, RB, FSU

The Panther’s clearly took a step back after their stellar season leading to a super bowl loss the year prior. Their defense is still sound and added Julius Peppers, which should allow them to pick up some more depth later in the draft. Dalvin Cook’s elite combination of speed and strength would be hard to pass up.

9. Cincinnati Bengals (6-9-1)

Top needs: OL, LB, Edge

PICK: Jonathan Allen, DL, Alabama

While the Bengal’s need to deal with the departures of Andrew Whitworth and Kevin Zeitler, it will be hard to overlook a defensive lineman of Allen’s caliber. The loss of Domata Peko also leaves an opening for depth. Allen’s tape proves he is versatile, technically sound, and a real force on opposing o-lines.

10. Buffalo Bills (7-9)

Top needs: DB, WR, OT

PICK: O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama

After plugging some holes in their WR contingent the Bills will look to add another dynamic offensive weapon. Tyrod Taylor is no stud, but with Charles Clay and Howard running a two tight end set he has a way better chance of dicing up the defense. Along with added run blocking ability this offense could become two-dimensional and scary.

11. New Orleans Saints (7-9)

Top needs: DB, LB, WR

PICK: Derek Barnett, DE, Tennessee

A few top DB’s are already off the table, but the Saints defense needs a real bad facelift all around. Most people are going to assume that a WR would be taken here, but with two picks in the first round you can’t pass up the strong defensive talent on the board. Barnett will provide consistent pressure off the edge and create a scary defensive front alongside Cam Jordan and Nick Fairley.

12. Cleveland Browns (from Philadelphia Eagles) (1-15)

Top needs: QB, pass rusher, DB

PICK: Deshone Kizer, QB, Notre Dame

In Hue Jacksons second year as Browns head coach, he needs to build confidence in a city that has struggled since I can remember. The first pick addressed their defense by selecting the most NFL ready edge rusher. What better way to boost their offense, then to select a pro-style quarterback he can build a future around.

13. Arizona Cardinals (7-8-1)

Top needs: ILB, QB, DB

PICK: Marlon Humphrey, CB, Alabama

The Cardinals have lost quite a few important pieces of their defense in the offseason. Lucky for them, there are quite a few options at play. Safety, Inside Linebacker, and Corner are all needs. With Marlon Humphrey’s height, speed, and ability to run stuff he will be hard to pass up. Don’t be surprised if the cardinals look to deal this pick though.

14. Philadelphia Eagles (from Minnesota Vikings) (7-9)

Top needs: CB, RB, DE

PICK: Christian McCaffery, RB, Stanford

The Eagles have done well giving their future franchise QB an assault of weapons with Alshon Jeffery and Torrey Smith. Don’t be surprised if they snag up the Stanford Stud, Christian McCaffery, with this pick to sure up their offensive prowess. There is a lot of depth at CB and DE which they will surely explore in the next rounds.

15. Indianapolis Colts (8-8)

Top needs: OL, DL, RB

PICK: Reuben Foster, ILB, Alabama

Although Reuben Foster has recently been in the media for the wrong reasons, it’s easy to overlook a small scuffle at the combine when you review his talent level. Three down linebacker, check. Vision and speed to work sideline to sideline, check. Size and technique to track and tackle most tight ends and running backs, check.

16. Baltimore Ravens (8-8)

Top needs: OLB, WR, CB

PICK: Mike Williams, WR, Clemson

If and when Mike Williams lands in your lap at the 16th overall pick, you take him. With Breshad Perriman as your only notable option at WR, you have to give the overrated Joe Flacco some support. The ravens will fill the needs on the edge and cornerback in the next few rounds to solidify their defensive squad.

17. Washington Redskins (8-7-1)

Top needs: ILB, S, RB

PICK: Jabrill Peppers, S, Michigan

With Reuben Foster off of the board, the redskins will look to sure up their secondary. Jabrill Peppers provides support in the return game, can track and tackle defenders across the field, and has an uncanny ability to be part of every play.

18. Tennessee Titans (9-7)

Top needs: CB, WR, ILB

PICK: Corey Davis, WR, Western Michigan

The Titans added some great depth to their secondary, now what? Add a deep threat and an intriguing offensive monster. Corey Davis may have some injury concerns, but have you watched him play? He can beat defenders on the ground, in the air, and has amazing hands.

19. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (9-7)

Top needs: DL, S, RB

PICK: David Njoku, TE, Miami

Jameis must be going crazy waiting to take the field with his new and improved wideout combination of Desean Jackson and Mike Evans. Wanna know what is going to make him even more excited? Adding a big framed big play machine in David Njoku. Yes they have Cameron Brate, but Njoku adds a whole new dimension to the passing game.

20. Denver Broncos (9-7)

Top needs: OT, ILB, DE

PICK: Garrett Bowles, OT, Alabama

Trevor Siemian can’t take all the blame for the lackluster Bronco’s offense. No they don’t have an explosive run game, but it has been apparent that their o-line can’t protect long enough to give their offense a chance. With Bowles out of Utah being the most complete tackle in the draft, they essentially have to pick him. Him and Ronald Leary are a start to improving the trenches.

21. Detroit Lions (9-7)

Top needs: Pass rusher, LB, WR

PICK: Haason Reddick, LB, Temple

The release of DeAndre Levy was written on the wall as he continued missing seasons with injuries. That leaves a pretty important gap in linebacker depth, and Haason Reddick is the type of talent that could bring a whole new look. A freak athlete at the combine (4.52 40yd dash, 11-1 broad jump) and the versatility to play a few different positions. While I would be happy with a defensive end here, I feel the draft will have some talent left in the second round to bolster the defensive line.

22. Miami Dolphins (10-6)

Top needs: LB, OG, CB

PICK: Forrest Lamp, OG, Western Kentucky

Honestly, Forrest Lamp is the only name I have heard being thrown around as a first round guard talent. This is a key need for a team that is looking to compete with the ever improving Patriots. Lamp will provide quality protection for Tannehill and make holes for Ajayi out of the backfield.

23. New York Giants (11-5)

Top needs: LT, MLB, QB

PICK: Cam Robinson, OT, Alabama

As the giants continue to spend a lot of money on their defense, they need to start thinking of the offensive side of the ball. With an aging Eli Manning, the left tackle position becomes an area of improvement. Cam Robinson out of Alabama presents a mountain of a man capable of taking the reigns from current left tackle incumbent Ereck Flowers.

24. Oakland Raiders (12-4)

Top needs: MLB, DT, CB

PICK: Quincy Wilson, CB, Florida

The Raiders have made some great additions to the offensive unit, aside from losing Latavius Murray, so I think they look to sure up their secondary. Quincy Wilson was a force to be reckoned with at Florida and will continue to help the raiders get closer to that Super Bowl push.

25. Houston Texans (9-7)

Top needs: QB, OL, LB

PICK: Deshaun Watson, QB, Clemson

Regardless if Tony Romo decides to move over to Houston to make a last ditch effort to win a super bowl, Tom Savage is clearly not the answer. The Texans will look to add a signal caller with experience in winning in clutch situations and Watson is that guy. Next rounds they will look to bolster the o-line to protect the future of their organization.

26. Seattle Seahawks (10-5-1)

Top needs: OT, DT, CB

PICK: Ryan Ramczyk, OT, Wisconsin

It is sad how deprived the Seahawks o-line is…With little money to dole out during free agency they need to attack both offensive and defensive lines in the draft. Both tackle positions are in dire need of improvement. Ryan Ramczyk out of Wisconsin would be a great addition, having the ability to take on either of those roles.

27. Kansas City Chiefs (12-4)

Top needs: ILB, DL, CB

PICK: Zach Cunningham, ILB, Vanderbilt

The Chiefs are that team that is so close to greatness, but something isn’t quite there. Inside linebacker is a vital part of this team, and they need to start thinking about replacements for Derrick Johnson at age 34. Zach Cunningham is a great option for the chiefs to pick up.

28. Dallas Cowboys (13-3)

Top needs: DB, DE, TE

PICK: Obi Melifonwu, S, UCONN

Jerry Jones is always known for making splash picks like Zeke Elliott, and Obi Melifonwu is no different. Obi is an exciting play disrupter and Dallas has a long way to go in patching up its departures in free agency.

29. Green Bay Packers (10-6)

Top needs: CB, pass rusher, RB

PICK: Charles Harris, DE, Missouri

Although cornerback is a top need here, I feel there is better value at edge rusher for the Packers defense. Charles Harris will provide some balance for the young cornerbacks they will select later in the draft.

30. Pittsburgh Steelers (11-5)

Top needs: ILB, OLB, WR

PICK: Takkarist Mckinley, DE, UCLA

The Steeler’s just rained down money on the offensive side of the ball for Le’veon Bell and Antonio Brown, which was much deserved. Now they need to turn to their aging defense and add a workhorse on the Edge. Takkarist Mckinley will provide just that!

31. Atlanta Falcons (11-5)

Top needs: OG, DE, DT

PICK: Taco Charlton, DE, Michigan

Atlanta needs to add some power to both lines in the draft. With Taco Charlton still on the board, it will be hard to pass up this 6’5″ 277 pound animal. If only he would slide to the Lions for round two, sigh.

32. New Orleans Saints (from New England Patriots) (7-9)

Top needs: DB, LB, WR

PICK: John Ross, WR, Washington

Losing Brandon Cooks makes this pick a guarantee. Drew Brees isn’t getting any younger and they have a clear need for playmaker in their WR Corps. Ross breaking Chris Johnson’s 40-yard dash record (4.22) at the combine is a clear identification of his speed.

I would love to hear your thoughts, arguments, and insights regarding the 2017 NFL Draft and look forward to seeing everyone’s team improve. But mostly the Lions! Comment below or tweet me @evbtuesdays.

If you are a Tie Tuesday’s regular, you know that I have set some very encouraging goals for myself. Waking up early wasn’t on the list of goals, but will play a huge part in achieving them. It’s been a long time since I considered myself a morning person. This article lays out my new “A.M. Ritual” in hopes you can help hold me accountable!

The first thing to note is that it is equally important to structure your bedtime as it is waking up early. I decided that to get adequate sleep a 10:30pm bedtime would allow me to wake up rejuvenated.

Here is the morning schedule I will be implementing in February:

Wake Up – 6am

I am choosing the “dive-in” method, but feel free to gradually work into waking up early. I plan on setting an alarm for 5:45am and 6:00am. With 7 and a half hours of no water, you may feel a little dried out. Drink some water to help you wake up and start the day on a good note.

Journal/Object Writing – 6:10am (10 min)

Creative writing has always been an interest of mine, but honing that skill is by no means an easy task. I recently stumbled upon a common practice called Object Writing. This simple concept requires two things; A random object and a 10 minute countdown timer. No more, no less. Write about anything and everything that comes to mind regarding that object and restrict yourself to 10 minutes. Any shorter and you won’t get to dive deep, and any longer you may tire yourself out for future mornings. Get your creative juices flowing early and begin your productive day!

Core Workout – 6:20am (30 min)

After waking my mind up, I plan on getting my body in the right place as well. With variations of push-ups, sit-ups, squats, burpees, etc., I will feel better and be closer to my fitness goals for 2017.

Hygiene – 7am (15 min)

Shower, floss, brush your teeth, shave…You know the drill. This should already be a priority if not for health, but also for your appearance. Look good, feel good 🙂

Get Dressed & Eat Breakfast – 7:15am (20 min)

Breakfast has been a struggle for me without a morning ritual. I generally wake up with time for a quick shower and some sort of fruit on the way out the door. I’m planning on a gradual transition to an actual breakfast since my body isn’t used to it. Starting with eggs, yogurt, or even some granola I will work my way up to an actual meal.

Commute to Work – 7:35am

My commute is around 35 minutes depending on traffic. Whether you spend this learning a new language, catching up on news, or listening to your favorite podcast I believe you should take advantage of this extra time. I am in the lookout for some interesting podcast referrals if you have any.

I am very interested in hearing your morning rituals and opinions on my new A.M. ritual. This is a new endeavor for me and I am excited to jumpstart my mornings! Feel free to tweet me @evbtuesdays or comment below.

If you are reading this post, congrats; you have made it to 2017! You have been a part of inspiring milestones and endured great world tragedies. Now is your chance to reflect, set goals, and move forward in the new year.

After taking two weeks off reuniting with old friends, eating amazing food with family, and meeting plenty of new friends I am finally back in the “Emerald City.” Shout out to Kevin Haggerty and his crew at Great Food Bad Conversations (GFBC) for throwing an awesome New Years Eve bash. Check out their podcast as they won’t disappoint with their witty banter and interesting insight on the modern male cook.

This article I am focusing my efforts on laying out a fool-proof plan to get where I want to be. From being more productive with my time, setting actionable goals, and creating everyday rituals to improve my lifestyle.

Becoming More Productive

In order to know how to be more productive with your time, you need to understand how you are currently utilizing your time. I urge you to check out “Zero to Skill” by Zdravko Cvijet as he lays out the ultimate cheat sheet for productivity. His cheat sheet is consolidated to three core areas; Assessing how you are currently spending time, how to get more time, and how to use time more efficiently.

The most eye-opening experiment is writing down your weekly time allocation. I realized I had been spending about 20 to 30 hours a week on my phone, watching TV, or gaming. Write down your weekly totals and subtract from 168 hours. This will allow you to see your biggest time wasters as well as time that is unaccounted for.

Turn Rituals Into Habits

It’s easy to waste time you didn’t know you had, so start on the right track this year by creating daily rituals. Go to bed and wake up at the same time. Wake up early for a quick workout, journal entry, breakfast, and some coffee to get the day going. Set time aside to read a new book, learn a new skill, or clean your apartment. If you need help, you should check out the Strides app! It will send friendly reminders daily, weekly, or monthly on your phone to keep you on track.

Prepare to be the person you want to be! Don’t worry about losing spontaneity in your life because this preparation will allow those moments to naturally fill in your previously unused time. You should also reward yourself with some “Cheat Days” here and there to keep life interesting. No one wants to have every second planned out.

My Goals & Tools I Am Using To Achieve Them

Z from “Zero to Skill” has some great insight on setting and achieving goals as well. I have picked a few of my goals that I plan to achieve in the next year and have phrased them as if I had already achieved them.

Got a 650 or higher on the GMAT in 2017 (Personal Growth)
  • Purchased the training materials, dedicated weekly study time, and took all six practice exams
I became part of the American Marketing Association and actively participated in events (Social)
  • Met with an active member to discuss participation, joined, and volunteered for specific projects
I have gained and maintained 10 pounds of muscle in 2017 (Health)
  • Cooked a meal 1+ times a week and worked out 5 days a week
Traveled to the U.K. (Travel)
  • Coordinated with friends, booked flights, set up rooms at hostels, and documented everything with photos 🙂
Some of the tools I will be using to achieve my 2017 goals:
  • Strides App – To track and manage my rituals
  • Mapmyrun – To maintain my fitness in basketball and soccer
  • Allrecipes App – Utilize their dinner spinner to keep cooking interesting
  • Journal – Become part of my morning ritual to get my mind creatively thinking
  • Vision Board – Visualize my goals and who I want to become
  • Google Calendar/Google Docs – Organize my schedule and coordinate planning with others

I wish you all the best in 2017 and would love to hear about your goals and tools you are using to achieve them. The more people that know your goals the more accountable you can be.
